We walk day by day the roads of life. Over the years of our past, the miles traveled seem endless. Into the future, the miles are hard to fathom. Today, erected by the side of the road, is a mile marker. Some days that mile marker looms oppressively over us, a large shadowy reminder of the miles of struggles behind us. Other days that mile marker casts visions of hope when we look to the destination ahead. The length of the journey is unknown but as we carry on in purpose, commitment and hope, we know we will arrive at our destination.
The mile marker of today may be the birth of a new life. A bundle of squirming joy has entered our life. The mile marker of today may be the death of a loved one. A tight knot of grief and loss may now live in the empty place left behind in of our lives and heart.
The mile marker of today may be healing and relief of a lifetime ailment and burden. Gratitude and amazement washes us throughly, filling the dark places that once lingered. The mile marker of today may be the sudden onset of burdens and sickness. The weight crushes in on the storehouse of hope, challenging each breath taken and every movement made.
The mile marker of today may be a playground of giggles and delightful discoveries. Our eyes twinkle with merriment and mischief. The mile marker of today may be the courtroom of trials and tribulation. Condemnation and fear ring in our ears and our hearts as the gavel of judgment strikes sharply.
The mile marker of today may be as refreshing as ocean breezes with its gentle rhythmic pull of the tides. The mile marker of today may be like the brittleness of a winter’s storm with an icy coating that imprisons and isolates.
The mile marker of today is for today only. Yesterday belongs to a different place and time along the road of life; its memories and lessons serve to guide us on our continuing path. Tomorrow is not our destination; its mile marker will serve as the next step in our journey. Our road in life will be full of mile markers, events that segment life’s journey. Our road in life will be full of mile markers, as long as we continue to walk, day by day.
