Feeding the Masses

Sitting in the booth at the end, I watched them file in–as individuals, as couples and as families.  In walked all sorts of men, women and children–average, bony, disabled, elderly, fat, healthy, loud, middle-aged, old, plump, poor, quiet, rich, round, short, skinny, stocky, stooped, tall, vibrant, young.  The guests that entered through the doors were dressed for the occasion and for comfort–shorts and t-shirts, khakis and polos, slacks with blouses and blazers, dresses and suits with ties.  Their meal orders varied from table to table–Sante Fe skillet with eggs over medium with coffee, French toast and a glass of milk, garden salad with a water and lemon, burgers with fries and a soda, slow cooked pot roast with herb-roasted vegetables with mashed potatoes.  I watched them file in ready to be served and fed.

Sitting on the row in the back, I watched them file in–as individuals, as couples and as families. Needs and motivations varied from seat to seat–anger, confusion, curiosity, faith, fear, hunger, joy, obedience, rebellion, repentance, submission.  I watched them file in ready to be served and fed.

He watched them and was moved compassion.  Needs and motivations varied from person to person–anger, confusion, curiosity, faith, fear, hunger, joy, obedience, rebellion, repentance, submission.  He commanded that they sit down by companies of hundreds and fifties–as individuals, as couples and as families.  All sorts of men, women and children watched Him–as He took the five loves and two fishes, as He looked up to heaven and prayed, as He brake the loaves and divided the fishes, as He gave the food to the disciples to be set before them.  So they all ate and were filled.

They all left–as individuals, as couples, as families.  They all left differently than when they arrived–having been fed or fed up.
