Intimacy: An Act of Adoration

Intimacy generally refers to the feeling of being in a close personal association and belonging together. It is a familiar and very close affective connection with another as a result of a bond that is formed through knowledge and experience of the other. Genuine intimacy in human relationships requires dialogue, transparency, vulnerability and reciprocity.  Humans have a general desire to belong and to love which is usually satisfied within an intimate relationship. The term, intimate relationship, is also sometimes used euphemistically for a sexual relationship.  [per Wikipedia]

In this present time, there may indeed be plenty of fish in the sea, but there is also a lack of intimacy.  Bonds are forged between the lines of e-mails and instant messages, strangers connected by font and voice-driven software.  Intimate relationships sizzle across the wires, yet intimacy is no where close by.

The desire to belong and to be loved is strong within the human heart, for the human heart was created for relationship, for intimacy.  Neither Merriam-Webster, Wikipedia nor sources of lesser renown have told me so, but I believe intimacy is an act of adoration.

Adoration is love given with deep affection.  How can this be true in casual connections and among mere acquaintances?  To love, to have a deep abiding affection, to adore requires intimacy.  There may be many who know facts about me but there are few who can claim to know me intimately, to love me with a deep abiding affection.  There may be many who claim personal knowledge of the Ancient of Days, but there are few who are intimate with the Lover of their soul.  Those few are familiar with the act of adoration, intimacy earned through prayer, transparency, vulnerability and dependence.

The way between a man and a woman when intimacy is present is indescribable.  The two become separate from conscious reality and are renewed by a power beyond themselves.  It is an act of worship.  The way between the Lover and His Beloved when intimacy is present is indescribable.  In the act and the practice of worship, the Beloved is rescued from reality to be renewed by an unearthly Presence and Power.

“There are three things which are too wonderful for me,
Four which I do not understand:

The way of an eagle in the sky,

The way of a serpent on a rock,

The way of a ship in the middle of the sea,

And the way of a man with a maid.”
