Burning Brightly

Burning brightly are the candles
dotting the landscape of the cake.
Blow, blow, blow and blow again
until all of them are snuffed out.

Blow, blow, blow and blow again
until all semblance of faith is snuffed out.
Burning brightly is the anger
and the cynicism of woundedness and distrust.

In front of me sit the ones I’ve raised
and beside me are the ones who knew me as a child.
I dare not look at one of them
for fear that she will see the bitterness in my eyes.

Burning brightly between us is animosity
as thick as the concrete walls of a strongroom.
It’s the only thing real about us
in our face off for fakeness.

We speak polite greetings of acknowledgement
yet the public doesn’t even know we are related.
The jolt of our polar differences and willfulness
electrifies and electrocutes the party around us.

Burning brightly are the fiery darts
that pin us against the other.
Blow, blow, blow and blow again
until all of them hit their mark.
