Lion of the Night

Always the last to know,
revealed in the most cruel way.

Life steamrolls under the cover of darkness,
lies and deceit form blankets and pillows on which to rest.

Yet in the stark light of day,
reality for the innocent stands still.

Pain, sorrow, shame and grief,
loneliness and condemnation become intimate friends.

Frozen in time,
time presses in like an enemy.

Respect and honor fades away,
insecurities mounts in weight and oppression.

Abandonment and betrayal,
both notes of the song to which we dance.

If this is protection in the name of love,
please stop protecting.

If this is the way of a coward,
may the lion roaming the night devour you.
